To Thriving Community Places
Cool Waters Project

Cool Waters Project

Cool Waters brings together young leaders and community members to tackle the challenges of climate change along Nairobi’s waterways. By combining local knowledge with practical solutions, the project works to reduce flood risks, improve access to safe, green spaces and strengthen the bonds between people and their river environment. It’s a collective journey towards healthier, more resilient neighborhoods for everyone who calls the river basin home.

Our Main Objective

Public Space Network (PSN) empowers communities to transform neglected public spaces into clean, green, safe, productive, inclusive, and climate‑resilient community assets. We define public spaces as all areas designated by applicable law as open and accessible to the general public whether for free or for a fee. Public spaces may comprise city streets, pathways, squares, parks, gardens and even water bodies and riparian land.

To fulfill this mandate effectively, our work is guided by five cross-cutting pillars, each serving as both a thematic focus and a guiding principle:

04

Our Pillars

1. Co‑Creation & Climate Adaptation

Communities engage us to transform neglected local public spaces. Together, we reimagine these areas to be inclusive of all demographics and resilient to climate change impacts.

2. Community Programming

When rehabilitated community spaces lie unused, they risk being appropriated. We partner with communities to bring these spaces to life—with cultural, recreational, and educational programming that fosters shared ownership and strengthens social ties.

3. Community Stewardship

Local public spaces thrive when their use and upkeep are governed by community representatives. We support communities in co‑creating stewardship systems and frameworks that ensure long‑term responsibility, economic sustainability, accountability, and care.

4. Waste Management & Circular Economy

Recognizing that poor waste disposal hinders access to quality public spaces, our projects integrate anti-dumping strategies, resource-recovery systems, and community-driven upcycling to transform waste into local assets.

5. Advocacy for access and quality public spaces

Although our work is rooted in local action, it generates powerful impact stories and data that drive systemic change at both community and national levels. We harness these narratives and insights to engage key stakeholders—shaping laws, policies, and practices that expand equitable access to quality public spaces.
